The ballet Conservatoire is not one of the most popular ballets around, but is very entertaining to watch never the less. August Bournonville choreographed this ballet around memories of his early life as a pupil in Paris. Conservatoire was at first produced with a story and in two acts by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1849, and then later revived without plot in one act form.
Conservatoire depicts a ballet lesson in a French dancing academy. It is meant to reproduce a ballet class, but is shrewdly choreographed for theatrical effect. Conservatoire has loads of humour and charm and builds up from the simplest steps in basic ballet positions to the most advanced actions known to the dancers of the day. Many parts of this ballet remain difficult and exciting even by today’s standards.
The present production of Conservatoire was reproduced in 1941 by Harald Lander and Valborg Borchsenius (One of Bournonville’s pupils). Poul Gnatt also added to this production three dances from Bournonville’s Monday and Saturday classes. Continuing this tradition, Kirsten Ralov and Fredbjorn Bjornsson choreographed Wednesday Class for the Royal Danish Ballet in 1973 and was based on the technique formulated by Bournonville and which is still taught at the Royal Danish Ballet School today.
Bournonville’s classes varied for each day of the week and other studio ballet’s have been formed around this concept namely Etudes (1948), Ballet School (1962) and The Lesson (1964) where the productions use a dancing studio as a setting for a ballet.
Other studio ballets which follow a similar note are Afternoon of a Faun and Three Preludes, which also take place in a dancing studio, but are only danced as duet’s. In Three Preludes, there is a bar in the centre which becomes the third element in the ballet and essentially turns it into a pas de trios.
